Cara Avid means… (open letter to Avid)

( TRADUZIONE ITALIANA IN FONDO )

In Italian, the word “Avido” means “Greedy” in English.
In Italian, the word “cara” means both “dear” and “expensive”.

So, the best way to start this open letter is:

Cara Avid,

something wrong is happening between you and your customers.
After the announced release of the unexpected Pro Tools 10 and
the new HDX hardware, the price for upgrades and exchanges,
users started to feel very upset and organize them self to strongly
express to Avid their mood and their reasons. .

Let me introduce myself: I own and run the leading commercial recording
studio in Genova, Italy, I’m on the business since 1998, and
Pro Tools user since version 4.2, so I consider myself a Pro Tools
expert (even if I don’t have any unuseful Avid certification).

Yearly, I keep Audio Engineering Courses, training from 20 to 30
new engineers per year since 2005.
Many of my students bought an LE system because it’s the platform
used in my studio and because I always supported Avid and their
products (you’re welcome).

UNTIL NOW.

To be more effective and clear to express my ideas, and why I’ve
joined the Avid’s war, I’ll be quite schematic.

There are two types of Pro Tools users: (ex) LE and (ex) HD.

About the first category, from amateurs to home and project studios,
those users are angry with Avid because:
* Price of upgrade from v.8 and v.9 to v.10 is way too high.
* v.10 has new features but is not that innovative.
* v.10 is a transition version to v.11 that will be 64bit, so it’s born obsolete.
* v.10 is the last version that support “legacy” hardware.
* Seems that Avid is caring only about profit and not on customer’s needs.

About the second category, commercial recording studios including myself,
we are angry with Avid because:
* Price of upgrade from v.8 and v.9 to v.10 is way too high.
* v.10 has new features but is not that innovative.
* v.10 is a transition version to v.11 that will be 64bit, so it’s born obsolete.
* v.10 is the last version that support “legacy” hardware.
* Seems that Avid is caring only about profit and not on customer’s needs.
* Most of all have a third part interface(s), from Apogee to Prism and so on,
(you should read many thousands of bucks invested) and we don’t know
if we are going to throw this stuff in the garbage.
* Avid support is getting weaker, Avid maybe is listening but not acting
properly with their customers.
* Avid don’t tell us about the schedule of future releases and technology,
so why should I invest so much money if I don’t know what will happen later?

Now I would like to ask some questions and write some thoughts “cara Avid”,
I do EXPECT you to answer with great detail to each point, WITHOUT avoiding
any arguments.

*1*
I (as many other colleagues) am stucked with my Pro Tools HD3 system
PCI, 8.0 on a almost 8 years old Mac G5, have a 192, an Apogee AD16x
and a Lynx Aurora 16. This system, monitor included WAS worth about
24.000 euro (33.000 USD) and as you all know is a dead system because
it’s no more upgradable.
Please note that my system is running perfectly (except for some Pro Tools
bugs in 8.0) and I keep doing great records and mixes.
A brand new top notch Avid Pro Tools system, with the same I/O will be:
Mac Pro 8 core + monitor (my old HD Cinema Display is also not compatible),
Pro Tools HDX2 + 2x HD I/O (16×16) for a grand total of 22.700 euro
(31.000 USD).
If I use one of your generous exchange program trading my HD3 and my 192
(originally 15.000 euro – 20.000 USD) the saving will be 2.000 USD.
I mean, trading my HD3 + 192 for a HDX + HD I/O (not an HDX2) it’s just
2.000 USD saving. This prices are from Sweetwater, so anyone can check.
Guys, this is far from being ridiculous, it’s really beyond.
And what is INSULTING, is that YOU are telling us that this is a great deal and
opportunity that Avid is offering to customers. Nice, thank you…
ALSO, the HDX system is not a milestone, it’s not as the step from the old “Mix”
system to the “HD”, having more DSP and headroom will not improve my sound
that big.
QUESTIONS:
So, what should lead me to spend 31.000 USD for a new system while mine
is still working fine?
What will happen to my Apogee and my Aurora 16?
Will them be supported from PT11?
There will be some new HDX cards (about 800 euros each)
to put into third parts converters that will be supported by PT11 and later versions?
A “guru” of audio pro industry, talking about buying gear, told me to ask myself
a simple question if I want to buy new gear: “Will this new piece of gear allow
me to make more money?”.
Considering that I cannot rise the studio fare for the “brand new” Pro Tools “technology”
the answer is “no”.
So “cara Avid”, please tell me your point of view and convince me to invest again
in your product, keeping in mind that if a new PT rig have a 8 years of life span,
(without considering the various software upgrade costs) it
would be a constant investment of nearly 4.000 USD per year.

*2*
Let’s imagine for a moment that I want to buy a brand new HDX system, with the
new converters, AAX plug-ins and so on.
I invest many, many thousands of bucks in a PCIe based system, right?
QUESTIONS:
Do you know that Apple HAS NOT CONFIRMED the willing to continue
producing Mac Pro’s due to the reduced number of units selled?
If Apple will dismiss the production of machines like Mac Pro, what will happen
in the near future with the mighty HDX PCIe cards?
Will Avid provide a GENEROUS exchange between the obsolete PCIe HDX cards
and the brand new Thunderbolt or USB3 (or 4) system?
What is Avid thinking and planning about new technologies?
Why getting out right now a brand new PCIe system while the future of PCIe is not guaranteed?

Let’s stop here for the moment and resume some of the points.

* Avid, your image to the customers is very poor, we’re all angry and deluded
by your behaviour, lacking of communication and lacking of transparency.
In a few words, we don’t believe you anymore.

* Your software release calendar is schizophrenic, look behind what happened
from 6.0 to 10 and explain why.

* Your price policy is insane. This is not the moment to force customers.
There is crisis out there, personally I’ve kept the studio rate freezed
from 2007 while keeping to invest in gear (analog of course).

* A huge investment must produce huge money, otherwise it’s to avoid.
I’ve spent 30k euro for a grand piano in my studio.
This instrument is attracting clients also from abroad, so it’s producing
more money, then, when I will sell it, I’ll get more than the original 30k.
That’s an investment.
Investing in technology (we all know about it) is like throwing away money,
we have to do it anyway, but now we must be more careful than in the past,
please keep it in mind.

* We don’t pretend to have free hardware and software, but we just claim to spend a fair amount.

* Recording studio’s clients don’t choose us based on which Pro Tools version we use,
but how good are our ears, musical taste and experience.
That’s why upgrading is not that crucial.

* Avid must inform their professional customers about what is planning to do
about new technology and new releases in the next future to let us be prepared
for our investments.

* Pro Tools 11 must be compatible with third parts hardware, HDX included,
allowing customers to change their systems in a reasonable span of time.

* Support us and we will support you. We are making war because we are
seeing you destroying the market of the leading recording and mixing platform.
We feel abandoned from you. Listen to us and act properly.

* Your shares are falling down at NASDAQ, you should do something fast.

* The way people communicate is different from the past, you can’t ignore
what’s going on between you and your customers because the word is spreading
fast, we can organize ourself and you can’t do anything to avoid it.

Cara Avid, we now are waiting for something concrete from you, we expect answers
and actions.

*******************************************************************************************

* I prezzi degli upgrade dalla v.8 e v.9 alla v.10 sono altissimi.
* La v.10 ha alcune caratteristiche inedite ma non è così innovativa.
* La v.10 è una versione di transizione alla v.11 che sarà 64bit, quindi è nata obsoleta.
* La v.10 è l’ultima versione che supporterà il vecchio hardware.
* La percezione è che Avid pensi solamente al profitto e non alle esigenze dei suoi clienti.

* I prezzi degli upgrade dalla v.8 e v.9 alla v.10 sono altissimi.
* La v.10 ha alcune caratteristiche inedite ma non è così innovativa.
* La v.10 è una versione di transizione alla v.11 che sarà 64bit, quindi è nata obsoleta.
* La v.10 è l’ultima versione che supporterà il vecchio hardware.
* La percezione è che Avid pensi solamente al profitto e non alle esigenze dei suoi clienti.
* La maggior parte di noi possiede interfacce di terze parti da Apogee a Prism e così via,

8.0), e continuo a fare belle registrazioni e grandi mix.
in modo così evidente.
DOMANDE:
costante di circa 3000 euro all’anno.

*2*
i plug-in AAX eccetera.
